When I first saw this drink on the Starbucks menu, I thought it was going to be unpleasant. Something about apple in coffee didn't sound amazing, but I decided to go for it. I ended up ordering five venti Apple Crisp Macchiato's in just four days.
Since I typically make espresso-based drinks at home, I knew I had to recreate this one.
You can find many Starbucks recipes on this site. Including some fall favorites like, the Salted Caramel Mocha, Pumpkin Cold brew, and Pumpkin Spice Latte

How to make Starbucks Apple Crisp macchiato at home.
This Apple Crisp macchiato recipe is straightforward to make if you're using an espresso machine. See alternative methods below.
To start making this starbucks apple crisp macchiato copycat recipe, brew two shots of espresso using your favorite bean and preferred method of brewing. Two shots equals approximately two ounces of liquid.
Next, steam ten to twelve ounces of milk, until it's creamy, and slightly foamy.
In a warmed mug, add about 3 pumps each of apple syrup and spiced brown sugar simple syrup, steamed milk, and hot espresso.
Taste to adjust as needed and enjoy.
Fun fact: The term macchiato refers to the “mark” or “stain” that is left when pouring the espresso into the middle of the milk.
Syrups
I use Monin Brand Syrups almost exclusively. The apple syrup and spiced brown sugar syrup is not overly sweet, making it easier to customize this Apple Crisp Macchiato recipe to your liking.
- I used equal amounts of each syrup for this recipe, but I have been adding an extra pump of Apple syrup.
- One pump of Monin syrup is approximately a ¼ ounce of syrup, or a ½ tablespoon.
- The first time I made this Apple Crisp Macchiato, I used a dark roast coffee. You can use any coffee you enjoy, but I do need more syrup for a darker roast.
- I'm sure you can find homemade syrup recipes online, but the reason I use pre-made syrups is longevity. These syrups will last, at room temperature, for a minimum of one year.
Caution: Since apples are naturally tart, it may cause dairy products to curdle. I have never had this issue, but if you run into this problem, add the spiced brown sugar syrup into your apple crisp macchiato recipe before the apple syrup.
Alternative methods
Making the espresso
- Brew extra strong coffee: If you don't have a machine, brew extra strong coffee using your favorite brewing method. Before I started getting into espresso, we solely used a french press to make our morning coffee. This will take some experimenting, but start by doubling the grounds without altering the liquid.
- Espresso powder: Instant espresso powder is another simple way to make your espresso, especially if you like your coffee on the sweeter side. I don't think this is a replacement for brewing espresso, but if you want to make this drink quickly, or you're not concerned with "quality" espresso, this is a good option for you.
Frothing the milk
- You can use a microwave to heat the milk for 30 seconds at a time, until it is warm to the touch. Carefully, use a jar with a lid to shake it or use a frothing wand. You can purchase one for a few dollars on Amazon.
- When it comes to hot espresso-based drinks, I prefer to use Half and Half (also referred to as a breve.)
- Plant based mylks do not froth well, so keep that in mind, but you can purchase plant based mylks specifically made for coffee. I believe Califa brand makes a barista blend, which is supposed to give you a creamier experience.
Variations
- Iced Apple Crisp Macchiato: Brew two shots of espresso using your favorite brewing method. Place the espresso in the freezer to rapid chill, or pour very slowly over ice. Pack a large glass with ice, add espresso and milk of choice. Finally, add apple and spiced brown sugar syrup to taste.
- Milk: I think this drink would be incredible with oat milk. If you give it a try, comment below and let me know how it is.
Equipment
Equipment can have a big impact on how a recipe turns out. Ever since I purchased my espresso machine, the quality of my espresso-based drinks has skyrocketed.
The best, and simplest, way to make espresso at home is to invest in an espresso machine. I use a Breville Barista Touch which is a semi-automatic machine.
If you want genuine coffeehouse-style espresso drinks at home, I highly recommend purchasing a machine. There are many different models at every price point and skill level.
However, keep in mind that using an espresso machine does come with a learning curve, but I think it is totally worth it. To read more about my machine, and others, check out this article, here.
